computer advice · I give advice on home computers, software, communication and security. I offer help by telephone, email, instant messaging and secure remote desktop access.

I can help beginners and people who are frustrated with complex and unreliable software. Sometimes the solution is to use easier, more reliable and free alternatives. I use and recommend inexpensive hardware and free software.

computers

I use and recommend the Asus Eee PC, a netbook — a small, quiet and cheap notebook computer.

free software · Most of the software I recommend and support is free of restrictive licensing terms: it's free of charge, and has other important freedoms.

I recommend free software including:

internet services

Gmail (Google Mail) is a free-of-charge email service like Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo Mail but with some important extra features.

Web-based office suites are an alternative to PC-based software like Microsoft Office. Google Docs stores your documents on Google's servers and lets you edit them from anywhere with a browser.

Internet telephony is a way to make free international telephone calls without using the conventional telephone network. Internet phone calls can have much better clarity than conventional calls. Skype is an internet telephone service with video and very good sound quality. Internet calls between two Skype users anywhere in the world are free of charge, not counting internet connection charges.
